MESSEGE FROM THE PROFESSIONAL STAFF
Good Afternoon,
We know there’s still snow on the ground, but there’s been a lot happening behind the scenes as we prep for the 2021 season and we felt it was a good time to reach out and share what’s been going on. We’ve kept very busy developing all of our plans for this season in the face of the uncertainties of what it will look like as we monitor the vaccination process and efforts that are beginning to take shape across our country.
Some of the optimists in our mix were pretty excited to see the news that both Wiarton Willie & Shubenacadie Sam did NOT see their shadows - predicting an early spring! If only we had groundhogs that could predict when our golf course can open and our golf season can begin!! Closer to home, our very own Appellation Aldo has informed us that the golf course has, so far, wintered very well.
Premier Ford’s announcement about a gradual reopening starting February 16th has us optimistic that it won’t be long now until we can re-open the SIM room and some indoor Food & Beverage service. You can expect an additional email from us later this week, hopefully with some clarity as to what what our restrictions are going to look like in the Niagara region & at Lookout Point.
Over the next weeks and months, we are going to begin to introduce you to our 2021 Golf Shop & Golf Services teams in a new weekly spot called “Meet the Team”. If you have been a member at Lookout Point for any amount of time our first team member needs no introduction….
Position: PGA of Canada Life Professional / Teaching Professional / Club Maker & Repair Expert
Years at Lookout Point: 31 Years
Where did you grow up playing/learn to play golf?: Riverview & Westbrook. However, when I was growing up it was difficult to get access to golf courses, so we built our own places to practice and learn in the schoolyards and our own backyard.
What is your favorite hole at Lookout Point & Why?: It’s too hard to pick just one so I will say, All 19 of them ;) (that’s not a typo…)
If you could play any course in the world, what would it be?: Augusta National
What is your favorite moment in golf history?: Watching the 1995 Ryder Cup live in person at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, NY.
What is your most memorable personal golf moment?: As an amateur, I was a member of Lookout Point Country Club. I eventually turned pro while working at The Cherry Hill Club in Ridgeway, On. My first professional tournament was back at Lookout Point. I played in a group with Allan Billyard and shot 67 to win the event. It was the only time that I can remember where Lookout Point Head Professional Gord McInnis really ever got mad at me. He shot 71 that day and was sure no one would be able to beat him as he had the favourable home course advantage.
Who is/was your favorite golfer?: I don’t think I ever really had a favorite golfer ….. but I can tell you that it’s not Johnny Miller.
What are you most proud of in your career?: As a professional, I ended up having some significant back issues. It got so bad that I eventually had to stop playing golf. I continued to work, teach and do club repairs at Lookout Point. One day on the lesson deck while demonstrating the golf swing I found myself in so much pain that I had to switch and start demonstrating the swing left-handed. To my surprise, I felt no pain. I went back into the shop and told our Head Professional Gord McInnis what had happened and he told me to grab a left-handed demo set and play 9 holes with him. I remember much of the round being comical, both cause I hit some really good shots, but also a ton of bad ones. I shot 63. I put in a little practice left-handed and a couple of months later joined Gord and some members on the back 9. I made 4 bogies and 3 birdies to shoot a back-nine 37 and end up as the low guy in the group. That may have been the 2nd time that Gord McInnis ever really got mad at me. Being able to compete at a high level and doing so by essentially having to rebuild my swing from scratch was a huge personal accomplishment.
What advice would you offer to people who want to improve their game?: You’ve got a day job…you’re not a tour player. Don’t be afraid to take a lesson and make sure that you are working on the right things to get the most enjoyment you can out of the game of golf.
In addition to being a world-class instructor, Al is an expert club builder & craftsman. Al can be reached by email at Al@lopcc.com or by phone at 905-328-3508 for your lesson and club repair needs!
